V-Chip

TV Parental controls with the V-Chip

V-chip is a generic term used for television receivers allowing the blocking of programs based on their ratings category. It is intended for use by parents to manage their children's television viewing. Most 13-inch and larger televisions manufactured for the United States market since 1999 and all units as of January 2000 are required to have the V-chip technology. Many devices similar to the V-chip have been produced.

The rated programs' signals are encoded according to the rating, on line 21 of the broadcast signal's vertical blanking interval using the XDS protocol, and this is detected by the television set's V-chip. If the program's rating is outside the level configured as acceptable on that particular television, the program is blocked.

The V-chip technology was developed by Tim Collings of Simon Fraser University.

The V-chip has a 4 digit numerical password in order to keep older children from changing its settings. However, it can be overridden by savvier youth who read the television's manual to find out how to reset the password to 0000 (built into the V-chip in case the parents themselves forget the password that they set).

The name V-chip is widely believed to come from the word "violence," but an interview with Tim Collings reveals that it was intended to stand for "viewer control."

The effectiveness of the V-Chip has been heavily debated, as there have been numerous conflicting reports claiming that the V-Chip is ineffective or that few parents use it.

Television as an evil propaganda tool for evil people and the sub-humanized that believe.

As a parent you have the right to decide what your child watches on cable television satellite television and generally television. To ensure that you have control over their television viewing, use the "Parental Control Feature" that come with most televisions, DVD, cable and satellite boxes. In fact many information devices now come standard with Parental Controls. Rather than parents controlling children it ought to be more about those who transmit media programming not controlling you or your children. e.g Barbie means nothing and people who eat at McDonalds are low class. No arguments tolerated. Hopefully one day Parental Controls will be that sophisticated as to provide alternative viewing based on user preferences, it will send the executives at McDonalds into a spin if they found out that people now have control to ban their advertisements from their televisions.

STEP 1. To use the parental control feature, use your cable remote controller and press MENU. This will show the main menu picture which will appear on your television screen. If you do not have a MENU button on your remote control unit, press ALT.

STEP 2. Press the channel buttons up or down on your remote to move the pointer next to PARENTAL CONTROL. Press the ENTER button on your remote, and you will see the parental control screen.

STEP 3a. If you are a first time user, you will need an access code. Use the channel down button to move the pointer next to CHANGE ACCESS CODE.

STEP 3b. Now choose a four digit secret numerical code number of your choice. As an example (1 2 3 4) and type it in.

STEP 3c. You will need to enter your secret code one more time in VERIFY NEW CODE. When you've entered in the code again, press ENTER. This will take you back to the PARENTAL CHANNELS screen.

STEP 4. Once you are at the PARENTAL CHANNELS screen, move the pointer next to ADD CHANNEL and press ENTER. You are now ready to add the channels for parental control.

STEP 5. Enter in as many channels as you would like to control the viewing to. When you have entered all of the channels that you want to control, press the MENU button on your remote control three times to exit the setup program. You will now be back at the cable channel you were watching before you started the parental control process and the channels you selected will be blocked.

There are slightly different instruction as per your model. Most have a MENU or ALT button or press all the buttons until you find something. If you have any problems or questions about the Parental Control Features, please consult your equipment manual or contact the purchase store.
